Attendance and Punctuality Policy
Attendance and Punctuality Policy

Attendance and Punctuality Policy
1. Purpose and Principles
At Al Fanar School, we value every moment of the school day. Full and punctual attendance ensures children benefit from the complete learning experience and minimises disruption to teaching and class cohesion. Accurate attendance records are also essential for health, safety, and emergency procedures.
2. Punctuality
Parents are responsible for ensuring children arrive on time, especially if not using school transport.
Monitoring and Follow-up:
After three late arrivals per term, parents will be notified in writing.
Continued lateness will require a meeting with the pastoral or inclusion team to develop a joint support plan.
3. Attendance Expectations
Attendance is mandatory on all school days as outlined in the academic calendar.
Teachers will record attendance using the school’s LMS system.
Permissible (Authorised) Absences Include:
Illness or medical appointments
Religious observance
Family bereavement
School-sanctioned events (e.g. trips, assessments, competitions)
Statutory obligations (e.g. legal appointments)
Unauthorised Absences Include:
Holidays during term time
Social events, celebrations, or leisure activities
Babysitting or shopping
Refusal to attend school activities or trips
Requesting Leave:
For planned absences, parents must submit a Leave of Absence Request Form at least 4 weeks in advance. Approval is at the discretion of the Principal.
4. Unplanned Absences and Communication
Parents must notify the school by 9:30 a.m. if their child is absent unexpectedly.
If no notification is received, the school will follow up via text and email.
Continued lack of response will trigger safeguarding procedures in line with the school’s Child Protection Policy.
5. Attendance Monitoring and Support
The school expects a minimum attendance rate of 95%.
Parents will be notified if their child’s attendance falls below this threshold and offered support.
Attendance below 85% will require a formal meeting with the Principal and/or Head of Inclusion.
Where illness is cited repeatedly, medical documentation may be requested.
Persistent absenteeism may be referred to external authorities, though this is a last resort.
